for everyone

Welcome to my blog.

How to cuddle with an elephant seal; You can't tell me animals don't have feelings.

Thousands of people have been coming to this page to watch the video, and I am getting barraged with invitations. (No, I am not the woman in the video) Thank you, but I can only consider established bloggers unless I know you. I invite you to explore the many posts open to everyone. If you like poetry you might want to consider my book, The Cerebral Jukebox.

Thanks for coming by.

Addendum: some people have commented about the woman's not touching the seal; she is not allowed to. This is an island off Argentina.South Georgia Island is a sub-Antarctic island administered by the United Kingdom as part of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. It is located 1390 km southeast of the Falkland Islands and 2150 km from South America. It is the home of vast numbers of birds and marine life, but its remote location and lack of access makes it a rare destination for tourists. You can read more about Gold Harbor, South Georgia Island, near Antarctica here: http://www.coolantarctica.com/Travel/south_georgia_south_sandwich_islands.htm Many tour operators will require visitors to do a boot wash after every landing to avoid carrying seeds or other items from one location to another. In addition, visitors should examine all clothing prior to embarking to avoid bringing any plant or animal material to the Antarctic; invasive species have devastated many regions of the planet, so it is particularly important to protect Antarctica from this danger. I found this article, you might want to read about this video: http://holeinthedonut.com/2010/02/11/south-georgia-elephant-seal-sandwich-islands/ The music is Adios Ayer by Jose Padilla

That is absolutely adorable. I grinned the who way through as I watched it. You are so right...animals have feelings..and I believe they have souls, too.

So sweet

Animals absolutely have feelings. Emotions are an important survival trait - when a zebra runs from a lion, it is displaying fear. Without this emotion, the zebra would just stand there and get eaten - not a good strategy for the survival of the species. If a mother animal felt nothing for her young, she would not try to defend them when they were threatened - again, not good for the future of the species.

I find it both ridiculous and arrogant to suggest that of all the thousands upon thousands of animals on this planet including us, we are the only ones in which emotions have evolved

OMG that made me cry it was so beautiful!!

I want to go to that place, with penguins strolling the beach and seals hanging out with people. A wild animal being that sweet. There are so many stories about this kind of thing. That was really beautiful.

Animals have feelings. They have souls. I think their souls are vastly superior to ours. Look at the way they treat us, and then the way we so often treat them.

Gorgeous vid, thanks Sue.

In my work with dolphins and sea turtles and my caregiving of my dog and box turtles, I've come to realize making eye contact with any animal creates the most primal of bonds, trust. And knowing that this animal trusts YOU is so profound that it touches every cell of your being. Every time it happens, I experience a sense of peace and purpose along with tremendous responsibility as a human being and fellow planet dweller. It's empowering and humbling. This woman is so very lucky to have shared this incredible experience with a very special seal. She remained so calm, but you and I both know on the inside, she was screaming like a child on their first rollercoaster ride.

This left me speechless and more than awestruck. The look of growing adoration on that seal's face is undeniable. I felt that emotion to my toes, and will have new belief that animals feel these kinds of emotions, perhaps even stronger than we humans do. Thanks be to God.
wildocean2 wrote on Jul 2, '10
I think everyone watching this needs to take a step back - yes it was a great experience, but this is a WILD animal that is now learning to come to people. In Hawaii people continually try to become close with our Hawaiian Monk Seals - to the harm of the animal that as they become older - they become AGGRESSIVE to people who they are trying to "play" or "mate" with from learning to interact as babies. We have already had to REMOVE several animals from the islands - and this kind of "getting to friendly" occurs all over and than the animals have to be removed. We need to let wild animals be wild and not treat them as people.

Wow...so moving and touching. It brought tears of joy and yes, even hope. I love how the woman really allowed the seal cow (I'm guessing it's a female based on the lack of proboscis) to nuzzle her and how she refrained - must have been tough! - from petting her or initiating further contact. (She also was adhering to the Marine Mammal Act which prohibits initiating contact with these wonderful wild beings) She is a very respectful and wise and lucky woman to have experienced this gift!! While I'm sure she meant well, this is a WILD animal!! Humans can easily pass on viruses and bacteria that they have never encountered and that they are unable to fight. They can also pass these infections on to other animals. Even the scent of humans on a wild animal can result in their expulsion from their "community" (pod, pack etc). PLEASE people DO NOT TOUCH WILD ANIMALS! We encroach on them enough as it is. Please let them be.

i loved it, I love animals especially the 'wild' ones that establish human contact and interaction...BUT it seemed to be an adolescent male pup looking for mom or surrogate female with which to follow instincts and bonding rituals. Moms give young males experience in early courtship lessons. Sorry all you 'romantics' they are not emotional, they are instinctual, that's what keeps the species going. they don't choose and decide and have feelings, they don't run to chat with their friends about rejection...they just have God given instincts. We alone are able to emote. I still love it. thanks for posting

swimming from afar i get excited. It's hard to believe friendly places so undisrupted and untainted (for animals) like this exist, but i'm glad they do and especially that
not just anyone can say, "hey i'm going to Antartica!" Because i live in California (USA), and there are so many evil people here. That seal would probably not have
lasted here on our beaches...someone would have probably tortured it or made it their next meal or someone elses meal. Thanks for sharing this and giving me some

This video, only proves a point; the more you get to know people in general, you can't help respect the purity, and no nonsense of animals.
Animals have never leaned to reason, so therefore they do not have some agenda, they will explore only what they believe can be good for them, because they now everything else will kill them.

Risky thing to do, in my opinion. Lucky she wasn't harmed by this wild animal. Its all lovely and cute until this 500 pound wild animal, for whatever reason wild animals do what they do, head butts her or takes a bite out of her leg. Grizzly bears are cute and cuddly, until they eat you.
garmonbozo wrote on Aug 18, '10
Someone posted, "Wouldn't it be great to be able to read the mind of the seal."

Its nice to imagine wild animals have cognitive thoughts and emotions, like in the Walt Disney movies. But I just don't beleive thay have that capacity. At least nothing like what human can understand or are capable of. The only things going through its mind are likely on the order of, "threat, food, or sex partner?"

To "hadenough" : Yes, it's marvelous to behold the sweetness and sensitivity of animals expressing their "emotions". . . or so it seems. Animals certainly can express love and affection, but perhaps there was a misplaced sexual instinct going on here too. It 's hard to tell. But one thing's for certain. . .humans are NOT animals, contrary to popular opinion and misinformation from the evolutionists. Animals are animals and humans are humans--- we are created superior to the beasts---not evolved from them. With that comes a huge responsibility to care for the creatures of the earth, and respect what they are. Yes, we may eat some of them, and they may eat some of us, but we have the superior brain, and consciousness; don't forget that. Glory to God!
sanssouciblogs wrote on Aug 21, '10, edited on Aug 21, '10
Sorry friend, humans, yes, are humans, be we are animals. We aren't carrots.
And yes, it is our job to care for the lesser animals of the Earth and for each other. Evolutionists do not misinform. And, unfortunately some of us humans are indeed beasts; some of those animals are indeed more human--kind and compassionate than we are.

This was presented as a beautiful moment to enjoy. I'd prefer not to read more into it.
1skinnyguy wrote on Aug 21, '10
Yes, I, too, enjoyed the beauty and affection displayed by the seal and the woman. It's incredible! :^) Thank-you for posting it! I was merely responding to another's comments, which mentioned the "evolution" of emotions, which is incorrect. However, you are correct in one thing, Sue: humans behave as if they were beasts, most of the time. I take no pride in the behavior of the human species, but I do extol the one who created us in His own image; and He is no animal. Neither are we. We would be wise to dispense with the crippling notion that we are animals, and begin to act like the wonderful, noble beings that God created us to be. Jesus Christ gives us hope; Charles Darwin doesn't.
sanssouciblogs wrote on Aug 21, '10
Well, friend, we have different beliefs and are of different religions, but we agree on one thing: the Golden Rule.
We should aspire to be noble, kind and just. Darwin may not give everyone hope but we can aspire to pursue knowledge as he did.

Thanks for your visit.

This is a really nice video. South Georgia Island is off the eastern side of the very tip of South America. Here is a website, and on the left you can click on two different web cams. Most of the time you may see nothing, but once in a while you'll see seals, or penguins, an maybe a passing boat ot ship. http://www.sgisland.gs/index.php/(h)Welcome_to_South_Georgia?useskin=

This video shows us how trusting animals are and how, as humans, we must never allow that trust to be broken. A beautiful, spontaneous piece of film . Thank you for sharing it.

This link was sent to me by an e-mail pal who knows I go by the nickname of "Ellie-Mae" because of my love of animals and my backyard menagerie : ) I agree wholeheartedly with those who comment that while it looks uplifing, don't try it youself. I have seen footage of the same species attacking to protect a pup - they are wild and capable of surprisingly swift and viscious actions when provoked. Our Canadian Government is currently trying to solve the problem of what to do with 15 black bears who were 'tamed' by feeding to keep them at an illegal marijuana grow op to protect the crop! Any facebookers can check 'Save the B.C. Black Bears' site to follow that story -and hopefully sign the petition' - of what happens to animals when people interfere with their environment. What a beautiful experience to share with us all. Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for this video. You're right, this is turning all around the world. I have 3 cats at home and in their way they also communicate currently with me. ANIMALS ARE IMPORTANT, INTELLIGENT, and have a big range of EMOTIONS.

What a great way to start my day before I go out on service calls ! THAT put such a smile on my face. Had she scratched his whiskers gently he would have loved it. That,s what he was looking for. Try it with your cat, They itch around them. YES higher order animals have feelings Right down to birds and even small rodents. Watch them with their young if you want proof.

That was wonderful indeed, and it reminded me of the sea lions I saw in the Galapagos a few years ago. My heart soared as I watched the video, but I couldn't help but think that even though we all love to "commune" with wild animals, they are, nonetheless, wild. We should never forget that, and we should respect it. In this case, I'm sure that a lifelong memory was gained, but at the risk of having a face bitten off. That would have been another type of lifelong memory indeed.

Ohmygawd, that never occurred to me. I did hope he would not flatten her because he must have weighed the same as a baby elephant and she was so petite. But animals give you signals before attacking. This elephant seal approached her of his own choice, in a tender gentle way. The trust could not have been more obvious. He wanted to bond. When we were in the Galapagos, we tried approaching a seal who was struggling to breathe, a horrible tight plastic ring around his neck. We walked up slowly with small scissors. He let us know in no uncertain terms that he was not in the mood so we backed off. He barked, looked upset, and his grungy teeth scared us off too. (We later found out that two bamboo poles with fishing net between them would have helped pin him down while we cut off this horrible plastic beer can ring.) But when you let animals approach you, and they do in such a loving way, the bonding and trust are strong, wild animal or not.
We loved this movie so much, our first reaction was, Gotta go there. But after googling South Georgia Island, we realized that it would be too hard to get there (extremely rough seas, few boats, no village, in the middle of the ocean between the tip of Argentina, the Antarctica and the southern tip of Africa.) Too bad!

She is s stupid cow. This could have been very dangerous, they can weigh a ton, and she was also risking passing disease onto the animal. What would have happened if it's mate/father had come along. I thought there was a code of practice about not getting too close, this was highly irresponsible.

This is absolutely one of the most adorably beautiful videos I have ever seen, I was grinning from ear to ear the entire time. Sure, this is dangerous, but experiences like this make such a risk far more than worth it. I want an amazing pet seal now xD I can not even imagine if I had such an experience, I would probably have a permanent smile on my face for at least the rest of the year. :)

While I hope most people will not try to interact with wild animals, but will be content to watch them respectfully from a safe distance, this woman did not "pet" or tease or try to play with the seal (which would have been really ignorant) and considering the quality of interaction, it really looks as though it was meant to be and was beautiful to watch because it is such clear evidence that not only do animals have feelings, but we too are animals (though we like to think we are not) -- we are part of the chain. As such, if this video can raise even one human's consciousness about animals, then it is a very positive thing indeed! At the same time, all of you whose responses were, "I want to go there and do that!" If we all did that, then the animals would no longer be wild and imagine what that beach would be like -- it would turn into a human-centered "cuddle with the seals" gig. What if instead of trying to get our desires met through these animals, we focus on supporting these seals (and the many other wonderful creatures with which we share this planet) in maintaining healthy wild habitats, clean oceans to fish in, clean air and places where they can live relatively free from interference and harm from humans? That is what this video inspires me to do more of --- protect wildlife and their habitats. I can always get the cuddling from my non-wild friends. Touching and lovely video, though, thanks so much for sharing it!

I just happened to go on Facebook to speak about the horrors of what happened in Arizona and then I see your post Susan. Thank you for having this. The Spiritual connection is something that is only understandable to those who know what that means. What an experience. I know my life would be changed forever connecting that close to this beautiful creation. Who is to say we must stay away from each other. We must not hurt each other. Love doesn't hurt and that is what I saw. Wow. Thanks for such a pleasant surprise to sooth my heart after what we see that humans are capable of as yesterday's tragedy. Thank you for getting this out. I'm going to pass it to whomever I can.

It is wonderful to watch.People and the animals one and same. We have to understand their feelings and sentiments. but the tragedy is people have no time to spare their time with animals, actually they need some one to talk to them as we talk with the children. You have kind and loving heart. Thank you for sharing. My regards.
